Last fall, we went on a Vanoise road Trip for the week end! The Vanoise National Park, France’s first national park, lies in the heart of the French Alps.
Known for its stunning alpine landscapes, the Vanoise road trip features rugged peaks, glaciers, and lush valleys. Home to ibex, chamois, and marmots, it’s a paradise for hikers and nature lovers. The park offers trails like the famous GR®55, charming villages, and breathtaking vistas, blending wild beauty with outdoor adventure.
We first drove to Bonneval sur Arc, which is a postcard-perfect alpine village. Known for its traditional stone-and-wood chalets, it exudes authentic Savoyard charm. In winter, it’s a serene ski destination, while summer reveals lush meadows and hiking trails. There we went for a little hike to enjoy the fall colors.

Then we drove to Mont Cenis, a historic mountain pass and scenic area straddling the French-Italian border in the Alps. At 2,083 meters, it connects the Maurienne Valley in France with the Susa Valley in Italy. Mont Cenis features a large reservoir, Lac du Mont Cenis, surrounded by rugged peaks and lush meadows. The area is rich in history, once serving as a key route for Napoleon’s armies. Today, it’s a popular destination for hiking, cycling, and winter sports, offering breathtaking views and a mix of natural beauty and cultural heritage. The pass is also home to the Mont Cenis Fort, a 19th-century fortress, adding to its historical allure.

Then we went to Susa in Italy for a pizza and a Spritz. The city is nestled in Italy’s Piedmont region at the foot of the Alps, it is a charming town steeped in history and natural beauty. Known as the “Gateway to the Alps,” it lies along the ancient Roman road Via Domitia and boasts well-preserved Roman ruins, including the Arch of Augustus and the remains of a Roman amphitheater. The town’s medieval center features cobbled streets, elegant arcades, and the impressive Cathedral of San Giusto.
