Gruyère City

Gruyère City is a charming small medieval town in Switzerland, approximately 2 hours drive from Annecy. It is a nice drive along lake Leman first then in the Swiss country side.

The Gruyère Castle surmonting the medieval town is remarkable for its imposing architecture and its historical collections. The town itself has so much to appeal to one: the magnificient backdrop of Mountains, the buildings, the strange HR Giger Museum (creator of Alien) and the Tibet Museum.

The Gruyère Museum is at the bottom of the village.

Enjoy walking in the cobbled streets with beautiful houses and terrasse or around the Castle…

The food specialties here are of course the Cheese Fondue moitié moitié (served with potatoes and bread here with Gruyère and Vacherin) and the meringues with double cream.

We stayed one night there, it was lovely to leave the car at the bottom of the village and just stroll along the streets.

Near by, you can also visit the Cailler chocolate factory (very interesting and modern museum with free tasting at the end of the visit) and also the Gruyère Cheese factory.

It can be a nice trip if you are staying in the Alps for a few days, Taxi Massingy will be happy to drive you from Annecy to Gruyère City for a day tour https://www.taxi-massingy.com/en/taxi-annecy-geneve/

The word gruière comes from the German and means Green, since antiquity this area is famous for its cheese.

The cheese is sweet but slightly salty, with a flavour that varies widely with age. It is often described as creamy and nutty when young, becoming more assertive, earthy, and complex as it matures. When fully aged (five months to a year), it tends to have small cracks that impart a slightly grainy texture. Unlike his competitor, the Emmental, with which it is often confused, modern Gruyère has few if any holes (eyes) although in the 19th century, this was not always the case. The small cracks that can develop in Gruyère cheese are often referred to as “eyes”.

The meules of Gruyère can weight from 255 to 40kg.

Located at the top of the town of Gruyères, Gruyères Castle is the former residence of the count and tells eight centuries of art, history and legends. From the ramparts to the French gardens, from the Guards room to the romantic lounges, the Castle takes you on an unforgettable adventure.

We really enjoyed our visit and the walk in the beautiful gardens!

Mentioned in the archives for the first time in 1244, the castle is the principal home of one of the leading noble families in western Switzerland during the Middle Ages: the counts of Gruyère. Built in the 13th century, it is constructed in the form of a “carré savoyard”, a military design developed by the House of Savoy, of whom the counts are vassals. It is protected by an almost square enclosure flanked by a keep, a tower and small overhanging turrets at the corners.
