Mer de Glace/Montenvers Train

This post is about the Mer de Glace/Montenvers Train in Chamonix. Departing from Chamonix, this little train takes you to Montenvers 1913 m high with an amazing view on Mer de Glace glacier, the Drus and Grands Jorasses.

The Montenvers train is a scenic cogwheel railway that operates between Chamonix and the Mer de Glace, one of the largest glaciers in the Alps. Established in 1908, this charming train journey takes visitors through stunning landscapes, offering breathtaking views of the Mont Blanc massif and surrounding peaks. The ride itself is an experience, ascending over 1,000 meters and providing a glimpse into the majestic beauty of the French Alps.
Mer de Glace, translating to “Sea of Ice,” stretches approximately 7 kilometers and is renowned for its impressive ice formations and deep blue crevasses. Visitors can explore the glacier through the ice caves carved into it, which reveal the stunning blue ice that makes the site so captivating. The glacier has been a popular destination for mountaineers and nature enthusiasts alike, with various hiking trails and vistas that showcase the grandeur of the alpine environment.
In addition to the natural beauty, the Montenvers site offers facilities, including a restaurant and the Glaciorium, an educational space that provides insights into glaciology and climate change. The combination of the Montenvers train and Mer de Glace creates a unique alpine adventure, making it a must-visit for those traveling to Chamonix.

The Mer de Glace glacier in Chamonix has been retreating significantly due to climate change, with a reduction in thickness of over 100 meters since the mid-19th century. Rising temperatures and decreased snowfall contribute to this phenomenon, highlighting the impacts of global warming on alpine glaciers.
