Mer de Glace/Montenvers Train

This post is about the Mer de Glace/Montenvers Train in Chamonix. Departing from Chamonix, this little train takes you to Montenvers 1913 m high with an amazing view on Mer de Glace glacier, the Drus and Grands Jorasses.

ICE CAVE The tour of the “Grotte de glace” (Ice Cave) takes visitors into the very heart of the glacier. Re-sculpted every year, it describes the life of mountain people in the early 19th century. After leaving the little train, use the cable car to go down half way, then you have approximately 500 steps to access the grotto… THE GLACIORIUM A world of discovery awaits you at the new exhibition centre at the Montenvers Mer de Glace. Here the creation and evolution of the glaciers over the centuries is explained in detail.

CRYSTAL STONE MUSEUM

A few local stones found there.

The whole attraction is quite expensive 31.5€ per person but I think you have to do it once in your life…Also it is scary as it looks like the glacier is disapearing year after years…. It used to be so big when I was a kid, now sadly more stones than ice… The sad result of global warming.

Please wear comfortable shoes and warm clothes! When going up in the train, use the seats with the view on Chamonix (on the right side when you enter) in order to have the best view… Also try to reach Chamonix early in the morning, in order to enjoy most of it in a day (Aiguille du Midi + train + city tour).
