Here’s a list of must-see sights and must-do activities in Annecy, perfect for first-time visitors or anyone wanting to experience the best of this Alpine gem.
What to do or see in Annecy:
* Palais de l’Île, Old jail, Annecy’s iconic 12th-century prison and courthouse, perched on a canal in the Thiou River. It’s the most photographed spot in town and a symbol of the city’s medieval charm.
* Lake Annecy, One of Europe’s cleanest lakes, with crystal-clear turquoise waters. Rent a paddleboard or pedalo, take a swim in Albigny beach, or simply relax by the shore in Pâquier area. The lakeside promenade (from the center to Imperial Palace) is perfect for an easy stroll.

* Old Town (Vieille Ville), Wander through the cobbled streets lined with pastel-colored houses, hidden canals, and flower-filled balconies. Don’t miss the Sunday/Tuesday/Friday mornings Farmers market on Rue Sainte-Claire for local cheeses, charcuterie, and crafts.
* Château d’Annecy, A medieval castle offering panoramic views of the lake and mountains. It also houses a museum on local history and art. I personally enjoy walking up the hill to enjoy the old town roofs view from there rather than the Museum itself. You can also walk up hill another 10 min to Visitation Basilica.
* Pont des Amours (Lovers’ Bridge), A romantic iron bridge with a legend: couples who kiss here will stay together forever. The views of the lake and canals are stunning and it is also perfect for an Instagram photo.
* Boat Cruise on Lake Annecy, Take a scenic cruise to villages like Talloires or Menthon-Saint-Bernard. Only do it when the weather is very good so the view and color of the water are really nice.
* Cycle the Lake Loop, Rent a bike and ride the 42-km (26-mile) trail around the lake. It’s flat, well-marked, and passes through charming lakeside villages, cafés and beaches. Easier to do it clockwise as you will go down hill in Talloires (short but steep). Do not forget your swimming suit!

* Try Local Specialties, Indulge in Savoyard classics like fondue, tartiflette, or raclette at a traditional restaurant. For something lighter, taste the féra or omble chevalier (local lake fish) at a lakeside eatery.
* Explore the Gorges du Fier – A short drive from Annecy or with the Red city tour bus, this dramatic canyon features a suspended walkway over a roaring river. It’s a thrilling nature escape! Also visit the Montrottier Castle while there.

* Day Trip to Talloires, col de la Forclaz – Visit the charming village of Talloires for its abbey and lakeside dining and the panoramic view on the lake from Col de la Forclaz. You can also do your first tandem jump there as it is a wonderful paragliding spot.
* visit Menthon st Bernard Castle or visit it during one of its famous event like the Christmas market.
* shopping malls: Courrier center and Galeries Lafayette (climbing wall and slide for kids)
* Day trip to La Clusaz, Semnoz or Glières for hiking or skiing (depending on the season). Depending on the time of the year, you can use public transport to get there.
* book a personalized lake tour with an English speaking driver,
– Best Time to Visit: Spring (April–June) for blooming flowers and fewer crowds, or early autumn (September–October) for warm weather and golden foliage.
– Getting Around: The Old Town is best explored on foot, but bikes and electric scooters are great for covering more ground. Buses and boats connect the lake’s villages.
During your transfer from Geneva airport to Annecy, do not hesitate to ask your driver what to do or see in Annecy.
